2009 Update on Red Bird Mission
In 2006 a group was organized to help raise funds for Red Bird Mission School which was in danger of closing. The group was community based and called themselves SOS, Save Our School. Thanks to the efforts of school personnel, community members, and mission supporters nationwide, the closing was averted. SOS changed its name to Support Our School and is still actively raising money in various ways including gospel sings and contacts with alumni. The people of the Red Bird area of southeastern Kentucky have depended on the Mission School to provide a quality Christian education for their children since 1921.
You can be a part of this important outreach by your contributions, prayers, and service.

Parkersburg Urban Ministries
Gustke Center & Women's Care Center
First United Methodist Church is a church in ministry to those in need, both locally and around the world. Locally FUMC works with Parkersburg Urban Ministries (PUM) to provide food and other assistance to those in need.
Jack Hoffman and Pat Safstrom delivered over sixty bags of gifts to PUM on March 12. We received a phone call from Lisa Taylor to let us know what a wonderful blessing our donations were to the ongoing ministry of the downtown churches.
First United Methodist Church also helps the Gustke Center, (Children's Home Society of WV), providing crisis/emergency residential care for children and adolescents age 3-17 (male or female) who are in need of support due to abuse or neglect, abandonment, youth service supervision, delinquency until a more permanent plan and/or placement can be arranged.
In addition to PUM and the Gustke Center, First United Methodist Church also supports the Women's Care Center of Parkersburg. The Women's Care Center is a Christian, pro-life ministry existing for the purpose of presenting the love and gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. It is staffed by volunteers, known as advocates, who have received training in crisis intervention. Within a caring, comfortable atmosphere, the Women's Care Center desires to do everything possible to assist clients with educational information and compassionate support.
