First United Methodist Church

Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.

On June 1, 1799 Rev. Robert Manley established the Little Kanawha Circuit of the Methodist Church. In 1815 Methodists in Parkersburg built a Little Brick Church on Avery Street. In 1835 a new church was built on 5th Street, but was later reorganized and moved in 1862. Monroe church burned in 1873 and the Methodists built “Old First Church” on 5th and Juliana. This beautiful brick church was damaged by an explosion and led to the construction of a new church on 10th and Juliana Streets. Here the congregation has worshipped since 1911.  In 1999 we celebrated the 200th year of Methodism in the Ohio Valley.

Welcome

We would feel very privileged to have you worship with us on Sunday. If you are looking for a new church home, we hope you will visit us and consider becoming a part of our wonderful family.

The main reason we come together as a family of God is to worship the Lord. When we humbly and sincerely put our faith and trust in God, we receive God’s blessing, guidance and peace that passes all understanding. We hope you experience the healing touch of God’s grace today.

We are privileged to serve the living God, and we count it a responsibility and an honor to serve others as Jesus Christ served us. At First Church, there are many opportunities for you to use your gifts to reach out to others.

At First Church we believe the Bible is God’s perfect Word and is relevant to every generation. The Scriptures instruct us in truth and inspire us to please God with our daily lives. We invite you to join us in studying God’s Word.

Being a believer in Jesus Christ is a wonderful adventure! There are many ways members can experience the life changing touch of God here through exciting ministries, Bible studies and special programs.

The bonds between Christian friendships are like no others. We believe in cultivating relationships and strengthening those bonds between members of our church. You’ll discover that love, service, encouragement and accountability are the hallmarks of friendship here. Our arms are always open.
